Literature Text

Once there were a group of 5 teenage friends that lived in a province in the Philippines. One day, the leader of the group came up with a ghastly idea.  He was curious about life after death so he proposed that the group make a promise.  The promise was that the person who dies first must have  two pieces chalk put inside the coffin with the body.  One red, one white.  The spirit of the dead friend then has to come back to them and write in white chalk if he is in heaven, and write in red chalk if he is in hell.  For some reason, the group agreed.

A few years passed, and one of the friends was hit by a motorcycle taxi.  It's a taxi that's a motorcycle with a sidecar that you can find in the Philippines.  Anyway, that friend had a severely damaged spleen and was in a comma for a few weeks.  When he finally woke up, his friends came to visit him.  The first thing their leader asked was "did you remember the promise? you have to come back to us if you die".  The hospitalized friend got mad at them and told them to leave the room.  A few days later, the friend passed away.

At the open casket service, the leader of the group came to put the pieces of chalk in his coffin but the other three friends tried to convince him not to.  He responded that if he does not do it, it would be breaking the promise.  But before he can place the chalk on the coffin, the family members of the deceased caught them and got angry.  So the group of friends were beaten and were forced to leave the funeral home.

Weeks later, the group of friends met again.  All of them except the leader said they heard scratching sounds on the outside of their doors the night before.  The three also said they found a picture of a cloud etched on to their door the next morning.  But for the leader's situation was different.  The reason he did not hear scratching sounds that night is because chalk was used to draw an object on his door.  In red chalk, a picture of flames was drawn on his door.  With his written in the center.
